It is said that before the time of humans - there was a massive samudra manthan (churning of the ocean) . This was carried out by the Gods on one side and the Demons on the other side. They combined their forces for a common goal - to unearth the greatest and most precious treasures from the depths of the ocean. The greatest of the great treasure of them all was - the Amrit kumbha (pot of immortality nectar). Both Demons and Gods wanted amrit which will make them immortal and hence invincible. A great battle ensued, and spread to the four big cities. These cities were Naasik, Ujjain, Haridwar and Prayag.
Even to this day, this epic battle is remembered in the form of the Kumbh festival. Astrology suggests follwing schedule of taking a bath and getting blessed during this holy festival:
1. When Jupiter is in Aquarius (Kumbh) and Sun is in Aries (Mesh) - Bathe in Ganga river in Haridwar
2. When Jupiter is in Leo (Sinh) and Sun is in Aries (Mesh) - Bathe in Shipra river in Ujjain
3. When Jupiter and Sun both in Leo (Sinh) - Bathe in Godavari river in Naasik
4. When Jupiter is in Taurus (Vrish) and Sun is in Capricorn (Makar) - Bathe at the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Prayag
Taking a bath at these places during this festival will wash away all your sins.
