ABOUT SHANI (SATURN)

Saturn, or Shani in Hindi, is a planet which is feared by many people. Sade Sati is the most common concern among people, but it is also the least understood. One of our readers asked us a question about the effects of Shani in Lagna (Ascendant) of a birth chart. For the benefit of our other readers, we decided to analyze it in detail and present an article for your benefit.

To understand the effects of Saturn, let us get some background on Saturn. Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and is second largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter being the largest. Saturn is composed of all gas without any solid surface. It is a very cold planet, with temperature going down to -150 degree Celsius. Saturn has 62 moons discovered so far and it's nine rings are composed on ice and dust particles.


The atmosphere of Saturn is composed of 96% Hydrogen and 4% Helium. There planet is composed of ammonia crystals and ammonium hydroxide. The core is composed of other heavier elements. With the abundance of gas, this planet is known as GAS GIANT.As mentioned in the shloka, Shani travels slowly, and completed one revelution around the Sun in 29 Earth years. But it completed one rotation on it's axis in only 9 Earth hours.

IN HINDU MYTHOLOGY


According to Hindu Puranas (scriptures), Shani is considered to be a son of Surya (Sun) and Chhaya (shadow). His brother is Yamaraj and sister is Yamuna. His color is considered to be same as an Indraneel Mani, also known as Neelam (Blue Sapphire).

The wife of Saturn is Param Tejasvi and one day she went to him to request a son. But Shani Dev was busy meditating and praying to Lord Krishna. After waiting a long time, his wife got agitated and cursed Shani that wherever, and whoever he sees will get destroyed. This causes Shani to keep his head down all the time.




SHANI IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY

This is the mythology behind the harmful drishti (aspect) of Shani. According to Vedic Astrology, Saturn is beneficial in the house it occupies, but harmful to the houses which it aspects. Shani aspects 3rd, 7th and 10th house from the one it occupies.

Shani hates actions such as fraud, deceit, telling lies, consuming alcohol, gambling, staying unclean, animal cruelty, and disrespect of God, parents or elders.

If Shani occupies a favorable position in a birth chart then that person progresses in several aspects of life. That person is hardworking, fair in dealings and justice-loving. His/her social standing is also very good and that person does not suffer from any major ailments. On the other hand, if Shani is not positioned well in a chart, then damage to the house, fires, debt, disputes and loss of wealth and property will occur. Eearly defects in teeth and eyes are also the effects of bad Shani positioning.
